As standards-based instruction has been integrated into elementary schools, student-centered learning has become a growing trend in elementary education. The purpose of this workshop will be to explore student-centered learning in the elementary general music classroom. Project-based experiences, learner voice and choice, and collaboration are all elements of student-centered learning that have great potential for elementary music. Teachers can base instruction on the process-based National Core Arts Standards to allow students to explore material, build musical skills, and work collaboratively. Through this workshop, participants will:

  • Gain new ideas to put learners in the driver’s seat – how can your students use their valuable backgrounds to learn from themselves and each other?
  • Refresh old song material with time for student ownership and creativity.
  • Learn team-building activities to help build a welcoming classroom environment.
All programs offered by the University of St. Thomas shall be readily accessible to individuals with disabilities. For details, call (651) 962-6315.
