This workshop will focus on integration of movement into our music teaching in order to reinforce musical skills and provide opportunities for creativity.  For early childhood and primary students, we’ll experience ways to harness their physical energy through simple and fun dances and improvisations.  For older students, we’ll explore processes that insure success as they create original movement.  A special focus will be placed on using the body to process rhythm so that the aural/kinesthetic can build a strong base for the visual/decoding portion of our curriculum.  We’ll end the day with a Border Morris dance a percussive folk dance that uses sticks!

Kris Olson has taught music and movement for 30 years in private, public, rural and urban settings.  She teaches workshops across the country and has offered classes in movement at various universities.  Kris has her master’s degree in Orff Schulwerk from the University of St. Thomas.  She studied dance at Zenon Dance Company while living in Minneapolis and now lives in Lubbock, TX where she is a member of Flatlands Dance Theatre and leads the Border Morris Sides “Brother’s Grimm” and the newly formed “Sister’s Grimm”.  While in Lubbock, Kris taught dance as an adjunct professor at Texas Tech University and currently teaches early childhood family classes and Musicality through Movement classes for ages 5-12.
