Types of Program
We understand that study abroad is not a one-size fits all type of experience. To ensure that you can find a program that fits both your academic and personal goals, we offer a wide range of program models. On all programs, credits will transfer to St. Thomas, and financial aid may be applicable. In our program search function, program types are designated by an acronym (e.g. UST or IES).
St. Thomas Programs
St. Thomas (designed by UST) programs are specifically designed for the St. Thomas curriculum, led by St. Thomas faculty, and are open only to St. Thomas students. These programs can be semester-long, a short-term program in January or summer, or embedded in an on-campus course.
St. Thomas is a member of the UMAIE consortium, along with several other schools in the Upper Midwest. Through this consortium, we offer a wide range of January Term faculty-led programs. These programs are open to all students in the consortium and can be taught by faculty from any of the consortium schools.
Other Approved Programs
To ensure that programs are available for all majors, St. Thomas partners with a number of approved external organizations, called Other Approved Programs. These programs are operated entirely by the external partner but have undergone rigorous review by St. Thomas to ensure academic quality, on-site support, and health/safety protocols.
Through a number of exchange agreements with institutions outside of the United States, St. Thomas students can study independently at partner institutions for a semester or year.
