Travel from Palermo to Venice with the Selim Center
21-31 May 2022

The Selim Center is hosting a study/travel voyage on the Mediterranean, Ionian and Adriatic Seas May 21-31, 2022, aboard the Callisto, a 34-guest yacht. This wonderful small-passenger vessel is the perfect way to see this part of the world.

We will travel from Sicily to Venice by way of Montenegro and Croatia, discovering historical gems of the Mediterranean, Ionian, and Adriatic Seas. The combination of fascinating history and sublime beauty makes these shorelines among the most spectacular places in the world.

We will visit and learn about Sicily’s Taormina, whose ancient Greek theater gazes at massive Mount Etna; the remarkable trulli villages of Italy’s Puglia region; the old, picturesque town of Kotor, nested at the head of a long, scenic bay; the beautifully preserved medieval city of Dubrovnik, overlooking the sparkling waters of the Adriatic; Split’s enormous Palace of Diocletian, one of the finest Roman monuments to survive from antiquity; the small town of Porec in Croatia’s Istria, home to the 6th-century Basilica of Euphrasius with its gleaming Byzantine mosaics; and Venice, our last stop, and unquestionably one of the world’s most stunning and influential cities.

Our travel and understanding will be deepened with lectures and informal conversations from two scholars who will accompany us, Dr. Ivančica Schrunk, an historian and archaeologist from the University of St. Thomas, and Dr. Douglas Knight, a professor emeritus of Hebrew Bible and Jewish studies at Vanderbilt University.

Dr. Schrunk, a native of Zagreb, Croatia, will share her expertise in ancient Mediterranean networks, island environments, and Roman maritime villas. Dr. Knight will address the rich layering of religions in the Adriatic region, including Judaism, the early roots and flourishing of Christianity, and the later arrival of Islam.

Because the safety of our travelers is a preeminent concern, all travelers and crew will be completely vaccinated from covid-19 in order to participate.
