Tuberculosis: New Insights on an Old Plague

Session Description: Tuberculosis is an ancient infectious disease the continues to kill over a millon people every year. Tyler Bold, a physician-scientist who is both an M.D. and a Ph.D., will explore the history and modern state of TB, with special attention to the similarities and differences between TB and COVID-19. This session will cover 1.) An accessible introduction to Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the bacterium responsible for TB, and its interactions with human immune cells; 2.) An overview of the impact of TB in history and in the present day; and 3.) How COVID-19 and TB pandemics interact with each other, and how each could eventually come to an end.

Session EducatorDr. Tyler Bold was born and raised on the great plains of North Dakota but completed medical and graduate school in the big city, earning both MD and PhD degrees at New York University. As a physician-scientist who specializes in treating patients with infectious diseases related to compromised immunity, he completed clinical training in Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, MA. Now a faculty member at the University of Minnesota Medical School, his research laboratory in the Center for Immunology studies host immune defenses against infectious pathogens including the bacterium responsible for tuberculosis, as well as the novel coronavirus that causes COVID-19.
