Student-Centered Learning in the Elementary General Music Classroom
As standards-based instruction has been integrated into elementary schools, student-centered learning has become a growing trend in elementary education. The purpose of this curriculum project was to explore student-centered learning in the elementary general music classroom. Project-based experiences, learner voice and choice, and collaboration are all elements of student-centered learning that have great potential for elementary music. Teachers can base instruction on the process-based National Core Arts Standards to allow students to explore material, build musical skills, and work collaboratively. The author provides an overview of personalized, student-centered learning within her own school district, and provides sample standards-based lesson plans that utilize student-centered learning elements. This curriculum project concludes with implications for using student-centered learning in elementary general music.
