Popular Music in the Elementary General Music Classroom

Popular music is present in the lives of students outside of the school but struggles to maneuver its way into the elementary music classroom. The purpose of this project is to discover means to incorporate popular music and its relationship with education, challenges of incorporating popular music in a school setting, a process to select culturally relevant repertoire, and several lessons that utilize popular music. Each lesson includes how and  why the repertoire was selected, a Doorway In (Wiggins, 2015) to exploring the music, potential pedagogical uses, and details regarding lesson execution.
