Play in the Elementary Music Classroom: Preschool Through Grade 2
Play and engagement are essential aspects of children's learning in many areas, but especially in the music classroom. This literature review explored how play contributes to engagement and enjoyment in the music classroom. Historical theories of children's play in general, as well as musical play, were explored. Types of musical play include free musical play and structured musical play, which includes singing games and movement activities. Benefits of musical play include kinesthetic, cognitive, and social-emotional learning, as well as increased engagement and musical learning.
