Building Community in the Secondary Choral classroom

December 1, 2018 / By: Mary A. Ebanks

The purpose of this project is to support the importance of building community within the secondary choral classroom. An atmosphere of community provides opportunities for students to develop self and social identities, work in large and small groups as a team, and have a shared experience with others, all within a safe, trusting place. Research and writings confirm the importance of positive learning environments for students to experience a sense of belonging and acceptance, as well as develop responsibility and self-discipline, which are life skills developmentally important in the lives of students and future adults. This project will highlight the many results and ideas from various researchers and music educators, and outline the potential implications of these ideas. Sample lesson plans will be shared along with suggestions for future areas of study and research on this topic.
