Teaching and Performing Espana Op. 165 for Solo Piano by Isaac Albeniz

February 17, 2014 / By: Raluca Sorina Boac

This paper summarizes the lecture portion of the public lecture- recital/demonstration presented at the University of St. Thomas on June 13, 2013. The project offers a deeper understanding of the Espana Op. 165 for solo piano by Isaac Albeniz, with a focus on biographical and stylistic characteristics of Albeniz's piano music, performance practice and teaching considerations, and a detailed description of each of the six pieces of the set. The performer may encounter numerous musical challenges while playing these pieces. For that reason my project strives to be a useful resource for teachers and students who are approaching Spanish music in general and this set is particular. The collection would serve as an excellent recital choice for a motivated pre-college student or a freshmen college student. In addition to the written information the reader will find out an accompanying DVD with the video recording of the lecture-recital/demonstration.
