Standards-Based Assessment in an Orff-Schulwerk Classroom
The purpose of this project was to design lesson plans for an Orff-Schulwerk classroom that allow for standards-based assessment and grading. The Harrisburg Public School District (SD) incorporates standards-based assessment in its assessment practice and assesses student musical achievement with the music standards of create, perform, and respond. This paper addresses the importance of assessment as well as different types of assessments. The National Music Standards, the history of the standards, and the Orff-Schulwerk approach and history are also discussed throughout the paper. Lessons that incorporate the Orff-Schulwerk approach, as well as rubrics and assessments were created for grades 3, 4, and 5 with rhythmic and melodic concepts for the music standards of creating, performing, and responding.
