Lesson Plans for Teaching About the Voice Change

November 26, 2013 / By: Mallory Jayne Kroon Martin

The adolescent changing voice is a topic of great interest and concern among music educators. Conflicting advice and conclusions from researchers in the fields of music education and laryngology have prevented the development of a conclusive theory of adolescent vocal development. Experts recommend teachers educate students about their changing voices, but lack specific advice or educational strategies. This paper present five lesson plans regarding the changing voice. A review of literature and discussion of learning theory support the lesson plans. An in-depth discussion of the lesson plans and a list of suggested resources for teaching about the voice change augment the reader's understanding of how to teach this information to students. The goal of this paper is to give teachers the tools to help students successfully navigate the challenging periods of vocal change.
