Increasing Secondary Student Engagement in Music Through Alternative Course Offerings

The intent of this research paper was to explore the issue of low enrollment in secondary music classes and discuss possible solutions. The paper covers a review of 20th and 21st century music education reform as well as a discussion of curricular and social relevance as it relates to the current trends of performance based music classes in secondary schools. Finally, this paper includes a review of common alternative music courses (non-choir, band, and orchestra) and how they can help to increase secondary student enrollment in music courses.
