Song Analysis and Presentation Plans for Selected Church Choral Compositions

August 12, 2013 / By: Tammie L. Junkans

The selection of quality literature is foundational to any choral experience. Throughout history, composers have created choral literature with artistic musical settings that enhance the texts. Adult church choir members, singing recently composed pieces for the worship setting, deserve repertoire that artistically sets texts to the same degree as historic repertoire.

The intent of this project was to examine four choral pieces by contemporary church composers for their use with church choirs. The four pieces used in this project are all for SATB choir and piano accompaniment, and are accessible for an average - above average choir. The main objective was to identify contemporary choral pieces whose musical settings support and enhance the text. This project included a musical analysis of each piece, with an emphasis on the most prominent musical feature of the piece. The project presented a creative approach to teaching each piece through the entrance point of its most prominent musical feature. It also highlighted four composers who are composing church music in which the texts are set artistically and musically.
