American conductor Matthew Abernathy is among this generation’s new legion of young and innovative contemporary musicians. He is the Chorus Master & Assistant Conductor at the Lakes Area Music Festival in Brainerd, MN and Director of the Liturgical Choir at the University of St. Thomas. Abernathy spent three seasons on staff at Minnesota Opera, where he was Music Director of Project Opera, the company’s nationally recognized vocal training program, Chorus Master for the Minnesota Opera Children’s Chorus, and Conductor of Voices of Opera, the Opera’s adult community chorus.

Well known for his work preparing ensembles, Mr. Abernathy has led Minnesota Opera’s professional opera chorus for productions of Don Pasquale, and has prepared the children's chorus for La Bohème and Dead Man Walking. He has further prepared choruses for the Lakes Area Music Festival, tours of “Distant Worlds: Music from Final Fantasy”, Minnesota Orchestra, and Detroit Symphony Orchestra, and has worked with a number of leading conductors including Michael Christie, Leonard Slatkin, Andrew Altenbach, Jonathan Brandani, Nicholas Kraemer, Kenneth Kiesler, Larry Rachleff, and Christof Perick. Previous conducting engagements include Opera MODO, Arbor Opera Theater, Oratorio Society of Minnesota, and 113 Composers Collective.

Mr. Abernathy holds degrees from SUNY Potsdam—Crane School of Music and the University of Michigan, where he was the recipient of the Brehm Fellowship for "...a promising young choral conductor.” He is currently pursuing a DMA in Conducting at the University of Minnesota. His mentors include Kathy Romey, Matthew Mehaffey, Jerry Blackstone, Duain Wolfe, Michael Christie, and Kenneth Kiesler.
