Music Matters 2: A Philosophy of Music Education

Being a professional music educator—being an artistic, effective, educative, and ethical music educator—requires much more than musical skills and knowledge, methodologies, music technology “know how,” lesson planning strategies, and so forth.

Being a professional music educator requires a philosophy of music education: a set of critically reasoned answers to the most basic questions underlying our field. For example: What is music? What is education? What is musical understanding? Can music arouse and express human emotions? If so, how? What is creativity? What is curriculum? If a teacher cannot provide cogent answers to these questions, then he or she lacks the GPS she needs to navigate the numerous challenges music education presents now and in the future.

The second edition of Music Matters (Elliott & Silverman, 2014) provides our answers to these questions. This presentation will summarize these answers, examine selected concepts in more depth, and offer Q&A sessions for further discussions.

Dr. David J. Elliott joined NYU in 2002 after twenty-eight years as Professor and Chair of Music Education at the University of Toronto. He has also served as a Visiting Professor of Music Education at Northwestern University, the University of North Texas, Indiana University, the University of Cape Town, the Puerto Rico Conservatory of Music, Guangzhou University (China), and the University of Limerick. He is the author of Music Matters: A New Philosophy of Music Education (Oxford, 1995) and editor of Praxial Music Education: Reflections and Dialogues (Oxford, 2005/2009).

Since 1990, Graduate Programs in Music Education (GPME) within the UST College of Arts and Sciences has sponsored the Jane Frazee Distinguished Scholar/Artist Series in which distinguished figures in music and arts education present their work to the community of music educators in the Twin Cities metro area.
