M.S. in Mechanical Engineering program requirements for catalogs prior to spring 2021

Current and inactive students who enrolled in this program prior to spring 2021 may opt to remain with the graduate program requirements from their current catalog, or move forward to the newest graduate program requirements for the M.S. in Mechanical Engineering.

The Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering is a 30-credit program. This popular master's degree program is designed for those interested in increasing their skill base and advancing their career. Coursework covers areas such as energy and power systems, fluids and heat transfer, product design, modeling and simulation, materials, and manufacturing.

The degree program has two options: A course-based path which requires completion of 10 graduate-level courses or a project-based path which requires completion of 8 courses and a design project. The design project allows students to deeply explore an industrially relevant technical problem in collaboration with our faculty and the student's company. The student gains from the experience with industry while deepening their understanding of advanced engineering concepts.

* International students: The M.S. in Mechanical Engineering is a STEM-designated and approved master's degree program.

  • A bachelor's degree from a regionally-accredited educational institution in the U.S. (or international equivalent).  

  • An overall grade-point-average (GPA) of at least 2.7 out of 4.0. (Applicants with a GPA less than 2.7 will be considered for provisional admission with their professional experience factored into the decision.)

To complete the requirements for the Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering, students must successfully complete 30 graduate semester credits and maintain a GPA of at least 2.7.

The MS in Mechanical Engineering program has two options:  A course-based path requires completion of 10 graduate-level courses [30 credits] or  a project-based approach requires completion of 8 graduate-level courses [24 credits] and an Engineering Design Project [6 credits].

ELECTIVE COURSES [4 courses = 12 credits]: You may either choose to do a design project or waive this option. Any electives chosen must be pre-approved by a program advisor.

 If you choose to do an Engineering Design Project, you will need to complete both sections (6 credits) of ETLS 881 and two additional elective courses:

  • 2 Electives (6 credits) AND
  • ETLS 881 Engineering Project (2 sections required = 6 credits) 

If you do NOT choose to do an Engineering Design Project, please select four (4) elective courses (12 credits) instead.

  • Electives may be selected from the Required Courses listed above or from other master's programs at UST; e.g. Graduate Programs in Software (SEIS courses).

Please meet with your advisor for this program, Dr. John Abraham, early in your program to determine the best class sequence, as some classes are only offered bi-annually.
