Study Abroad Financial Aid

Financial aid is available for study abroad programs approved by the St. Thomas Office of Study Abroad.

Typically, most students are able to use their scholarships, grants and loans to help cover the costs of tuition and housing for any semester study abroad program. However, for shorter terms of study, such as J-term and Summer Session, funding is sometimes limited and students often rely on additional borrowing to offset their costs.

If you have recently applied to study abroad or are thinking about enrolling in a future program, here are some things you should know:

  • Typically, costs for your program are subject to change and may not be finalized until shortly before the start of your program. If program costs or aid values are not yet available, you may need to rely on prior year information.
  • If your program total costs are less than the same term at St. Thomas, your financial aid will be reduced.
  • Investigate study abroad scholarships by visiting the Costs and Aid section of the Study Abroad website.

J-Term and Summer Session Programs

Students studying abroad during J-Term or the Summer Session are generally only eligible for additional loans to help finance their study abroad costs.

Semester and Year-Long Programs

Study abroad aid applicants follow the standard financial aid application process.

Students are encouraged to apply by April 1 to allow enough time for the necessary paperwork to be processed before departing. It is much more difficult to collect required information and paperwork from you while you are abroad.

Need Additional Assistance?

If you determine that you need to meet with a financial aid counselor after calculating your cost and aid for the term, please bring your completed action steps document and the itemized cost information for your program to your appointment - the "Calculate Costs" documents linked above.
